Hotel Room Must-Haves I Pack to Make Every Stay Easier

The little things that solve the annoying hotel-room problems you don’t think about until you’re already there.

You know the feeling: you finally get to your hotel after a long travel day, drop your bags, reach for your charger… and find nowhere convenient to plug it in. Or there is one outlet hidden behind the nightstand, already occupied by a lamp. Suddenly you are crawling around on the floor, moving furniture just to charge your phone.

That exact kind of frustration is why I have slowly built a small collection of “hotel room must-haves.” They are not the glamorous things that make it into a pretty packing photo. They are the practical little items that make a room more functional, more comfortable, and sometimes simply less annoying.

I travel often enough to know that even beautiful hotels can be missing the simplest things. An outlet next to the bed. Enough hangers. A soft night light. A place to dry a swimsuit. A way to freshen a wrinkled dress. So these are the items I bring with me—and why each one has earned a place in my suitcase.

Here are the hotel-room essentials I actually use:

1. A travel power strip or multi-port charger

This is probably my number-one hotel-room frustration. I hate arriving at a hotel and realizing I cannot conveniently connect anything because outlets are limited—or the nightstand has no accessible outlet at all. Some rooms have been renovated with USB ports everywhere; others make you wonder whether anyone has traveled with a phone since 2009.

A compact travel power strip fixes that immediately. I can plug in my phone, watch, camera batteries, portable charger, and anything else I need without spreading electronics all over the room. I especially like a flat plug because it works better behind furniture and in tight spaces.

TRAVEL NOTE: For cruises, check the cruise line’s current rules before packing a power strip. Many ships prohibit surge protectors, so a non-surge travel strip may be the better choice.

2. Roku Streaming Stick — Bring Your Favorite Shows Along 📺

Have you ever checked into a hotel after a long day of sightseeing, gotten comfortable in bed, and realized there's absolutely nothing you want to watch on TV?

That's why a compact streaming stick can be such a great travel companion! Instead of being limited to hotel channels, you can access your favorite streaming apps when the hotel TV and Wi-Fi allow it. Just remember that some hotels restrict HDMI access or require additional steps to connect to their Wi-Fi.

3. Travel Memory Foam Pillow — Because Hotel Pillows Are Hit or Miss 💤

One thing I've learned from traveling is that you never know what kind of pillows you'll find in a hotel. Some are too flat, others too firm, and sometimes no amount of rearranging makes them comfortable!

A compact memory foam travel pillow is a great option when you want more consistent neck support and a familiar pillow to sleep on. I especially like the idea of one that rolls up into a carrying bag without taking up too much luggage space.

4. Small Plug-In Night Light — No More Stumbling Around at 2 A.M. 🌙

I hate waking up in the middle of the night in an unfamiliar hotel room and trying to find my way to the bathroom without bumping into furniture. And turning on the bright bathroom light? No, thank you!

That's why I like packing a tiny plug-in night light. It gives off just enough soft light to help me find my way without waking everyone else up. Such a simple little thing, but it makes a big difference.

5. Slipper socks with grippy bottoms

Hotel floors are one place I would rather not walk around barefoot. Slipper socks take up almost no room in a suitcase, keep my feet warm, and give me something comfortable to wear while I get ready in the morning or wind down at night.

I like a pair with non-slip grips on the bottom. They pack easier than bulky slippers and are easy to toss in the wash when I get home.

6. A portable hotel door lock

Even when I am staying in a good hotel, I like having one extra layer of security—especially when traveling alone. A portable door lock is tiny, inexpensive, and gives me a little extra peace of mind once I am inside my room for the night.

It is one of those items I hope I never truly need, but I appreciate having it. Always make sure your device works with the specific door and never use anything that could interfere with emergency egress.

7. Travel-size wrinkle-release spray

I can pack carefully and still arrive with a dress, blouse, or pair of pants that looks like it spent the flight crumpled under the airplane seat. Not every hotel room has a steamer, and I do not always want to pull out an iron.

A small wrinkle-release spray is fast, lightweight, and especially useful when I need to get dressed for dinner after a full day of sightseeing. Spray, smooth the fabric, hang it up, and let it dry while you finish getting ready.

8. Hand lotion I actually like

Hotel toiletries have improved a lot, but hand and body lotion is still unpredictable. Sometimes there is none. Sometimes the scent is not for me. And after flights, frequent hand washing, and dry hotel air, my hands usually need it.

I would rather bring a small tube of a lotion I already know I like than hope the hotel provides one. It also doubles as a quick hand cream in my day bag.

9 . Makeup Remover Wipes

After a long travel or sightseeing day, I sometimes want nothing more than a simple nighttime skincare routine. I keep individually wrapped or travel-size makeup wipes in my toiletry bag for a quick, easy way to remove makeup before bed—especially when I’m exhausted or getting in late.

10. A portable clothesline

If you hike, swim, work out, or simply wash a few things in the sink, you know the hotel bathroom problem: where exactly are you supposed to hang everything?

A retractable travel clothesline gives me an instant drying area for swimsuits, hiking clothes, socks, and hand-washed pieces. It takes almost no room in my luggage and is especially helpful on longer trips when I am trying to pack lighter.

11. Laundry detergent sheets

When I am traveling for more than a few days, I would much rather wash a few pieces than pack twice as much clothing. Laundry detergent sheets are flat, lightweight, and far less messy than carrying liquid detergent.

I can use a portion of a sheet for a sink wash or bring a few for a hotel or apartment washing machine. Pair them with the travel clothesline, and rewearing your favorite travel basics becomes much easier.

12. A few foldable travel hangers

Why do some hotel closets have three hangers for two people staying a week? I like to unpack a little when I arrive, especially dresses, jackets, and anything I do not want crushed in my suitcase.

Foldable hangers solve the problem without taking up much space. They are also useful for drying clothes after washing.

13. Poo-Pourri or another pocket bathroom spray

Sharing one hotel bathroom can get real, fast. Enough said.

A tiny before-you-go bathroom spray is easy to toss into a toiletry bag and makes a shared room much more pleasant. It is also one of those funny little things everyone appreciates once someone remembers to pack it.

14. A travel sleep sack or sleeping bag liner

I don't use this at every hotel, but it earns a spot on certain trips. If I am staying somewhere rustic, in a hostel, at a mountain lodge, or anywhere, I would simply feel better having my own lightweight layer; a sleep sack gives me that option.

It packs much smaller than bedding and adds a little comfort when accommodations are more basic than a traditional hotel.

15. Bed bug travel spray—plus a room check

Bed bugs are every traveler’s nightmare because they can hitch a ride home in luggage. I like having a travel-size product designed for hotel and suitcase use, but I do not rely on spray alone.

Before unpacking, I keep my luggage away from the bed while I do a quick visual check around mattress seams, the headboard area, and upholstered furniture. A product can be one part of your routine, but inspection and smart luggage placement matter too.

TRAVEL NOTE: Follow the label directions for any insect-control product and use only where the manufacturer says it is appropriate.

16. A tiny Q-tips travel pack

This is the least exciting item on the list—and somehow one I am always glad I brought. A small travel pack is neater than tossing loose cotton swabs into a toiletry bag, and I use them for everything from makeup touch-ups to cleaning around small electronics.

17. A portable charger I recharge every night

Technically, this one leaves the hotel with me, but I make sure it is ready for the next day in the hotel room. Long sightseeing days, maps, photos, videos, and travel apps can drain a phone surprisingly fast.

I like a compact power bank with built-in cables because it means fewer cords to remember. At night it goes back on the charger so I can grab it on my way out the next morning.

Bonus: A little post-travel self-care

This isn't as necessary as a power strip or door lock, but I love having one small “hotel ritual” after a long flight or travel day. Hydrating eye patches take almost no space and feel especially good after an early flight, a late arrival, or a day spent outside.

It is a tiny luxury that tells my brain the travel day is over and I can finally relax.

And, of course… the usual toiletries

This list is in addition to the usual toiletries I always travel with—my shampoo, conditioner, skincare and other personal essentials. We all have our favorites, so I’ll leave those choices up to you.

There is ONE little thing I will mention, though: I always pack a bar of soap. 🧼

So many hotels have replaced individual bars of soap with body wash or shower gel in dispensers. I know a lot of people love them, but I simply prefer showering with a good old-fashioned bar of soap. So I always tuck one into my toiletry bag.

The point is not to pack more—it is to pack smarter

I am not suggesting you bring your entire house with you. In fact, most of these items are small because I want them to solve a problem without creating a packing problem of their own.

The best travel essentials are the things you repeatedly reach for and think, “I am so glad I brought this.” For me, that is an outlet where I need one, enough light to find the bathroom at 2 a.m., a place to dry wet hiking clothes, something cozy for my feet, and a few small comforts that make a temporary room feel easier to live in.

Every traveler’s list will be a little different. Start with the hotel-room annoyances you notice again and again, then build your own small kit to solve them. That is how a “must-have” earns its place in your suitcase.
